A hosepipe with a 5/8-inch (15 mm) internal diameter has many advantages over a 1/2" (13 mm) internal diameter hose, especially where you want higher flow or are using longer hose runs.
- Higher water flow: the 15 mm bore has about 33% more cross-sectional area than 13 mm, so it can carry more water at a given pressure.
- Lower pressure loss: friction losses are lower through the wider hose, so more pressure and flow reach the far end.
- Better over longer lengths: the difference becomes more noticeable with 30–50 m hose runs, where a 13 mm hose can restrict flow considerably.
- Better for sprinklers: oscillating, impact and larger rotary sprinklers usually perform better when supplied through a larger-bore hose.
